This March, AB InBev brought together leaders, partners and local officials across 24 countries to shine a light on the importance of water. Through 11 watershed showcases and 17 brewery events, we highlighted our collective efforts to improve water availability and efficiency. Together with our partners, we have enhanced water availability and quality in 32 high-risk areas around the world and improved our water efficiency ratio by 20% since 2017.
In Cape Town, South Africa, we collaborate with organizations like The Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature to combat diminishing rainfall and invasive vegetation which make water a scarce resource. Through these partnerships, we have helped restore 3.3 billion liters of water in the Western Cape and cleared 1,367 hectares of non-native vegetation since 2015.
Michel Doukeris, CEO, AB InBev said: “The Boland Mountain Nature Reserve in Cape Town serves as a powerful example of what we can achieve in collaboration with our partners. By removing invasive vegetation, we help release more water into local catchments, benefiting our farmers and the surrounding communities.”
In Belgium, our collaboration with Natuurpunt is focused on restoring De Doode Bemde, a nature reserve in Leuven that helps protect local water sources - by 2025, this project will have replenished over 350 million liters of groundwater. Meanwhile, in Jaguariúna, São Paulo, Brazil, our water conservation efforts have led to the planting of over two million trees to date.
Ingrid De Ryck, Chief Sustainability Officer, AB InBev said: “Water is not only our most important ingredient; it’s also a crucial resource that communities, ecosystems and businesses rely on. That’s why we work with nature, invest in water stewardship interventions and collaborate with local partners to protect water for future generations."
